Why do people watch degrassi

The characters put on minimal makeup and wear the types of clothes that regular students would actually try on. Plus the cast itself is the same age as they are on screen. While the writers of the script sometimes go a little overboard with the storylines, some of them are actually very moving and captivating. Degrassi follows the lives of a group of intertwined teenagers who live in the same area and go to the same school.

While many characters come and go, most of the time the main cast stays the same. As viewers we are able to learn more about our favorite characters over an extended period of time. As an old fan of Degrassi, I have to admit that the early seasons of Degrassi were some of the best. The storylines were of a better quality and the show overall was at its prime stage.

Therefore, seeing older characters pop in here and there is very exciting. The series premiered in and ran until Degrassi High then debuted, following the same characters from Junior High through their high school years until it ended in It was then off the air for 10 years until Degrassi: The Next Generation premiered in This is the Degrassi I grew up on and, more importantly, the one that gave us Drake. Next Generation ran until it was canceled in Fortunately, Netflix picked it up and gave it a fancy new name: Degrassi: Next Class , which premiered in January.

Through five iterations and four decades, the main tenants of Degrassi have remained relatively the same. Even the extremely millennial-focused Next Class bears the marks of the franchise's after-school roots. At first glance, each character appears to be a typical teen archetype - the charismatic bad boy, the sensitive musician, the boy-crazy cheerleader - but as the series goes on, these identities become more muddled, with each student struggling to find their place and define their own identity.

Degrassi 's in-depth examination of the teenage experience is greatly benefited by the show's dedication to diversity. It was one of the first series to include a transgender lead character, has featured many gay and bisexual characters, and this year, it introduced Goldi Soma Bhatia , the first character who wears a hijab. But Degrassi never uses Goldi's hijab or religion as a mere plot device. Instead, Goldi is defined by her passionate activism and work with Degrassi's Feminist Club.

That's not to say that the series ignores the Islamaphobia so many Muslims are subjected to. After the Feminist Club leads a protest against the Gaming Club, one of the gamers, Hunter Spencer MacPherson , lashes out at Goldi, saying her hijab is triggering because of its affiliation with suicide bombers.

The series walks a fine line between beating you over the head with issues and providing a relatable representation of what teens are dealing with. In , The Next Generation aired a two-part episode in which the year-old Manny discovers she's pregnant and decides to have an abortion against the father Craig's Jake Epstein wishes.

The episode was so controversial, it wasn't shown in the United States until two years later as part of a cast-selected marathon. But this wasn't the first time Degrassi tackled the taboo subject of teenage abortion and it likely won't be the last. Fifteen years prior, Degrassi High 's second episode featured Erica Angela Deisach having to wade through a crowd of pro-life protestors to get an abortion at her local clinic.

Alert: There was a Degrassi mini-reunion with Drake. Though Degrassi has been on nearly 40 years, the series will never run out of story lines, as evidenced here.

Though they are punished for what they do. It could leave a bad impression on your kid. But that depends on the kid. I would recomend parents screening this before they let there kid watch this. But at the same time you can learn from these characters. This title contains: Positive role models. Written by Anonymous April 21, This show is not as bad as people think. Your kids hear AND see worse in school. Degrassi is not inappropriate.

It even aired on Noggin before the channel's renaming to Nick Jr. Only occasionally a TV rating will pop up. Parent of a year-old Written by Zech December 12, Tough topics that should not be viewed without follow up from a parent or trusted adult This has plenty of sensitive topics discussed throughout its many seasons.

A few are parental abuse, relationship abuse, sexuality, gun violence, assault, cancer, suicide, and self harm are among them. Parents should be ready to address their child's questions that this show is sure to raise. With good follow-up it could be a great parent-teen show!

Adult Written by Ashlew September 6, October 31, One episode has nudity! In the episode Hungry Eyes, Emma Nelson takes off her dress and gets completely naked, exposing her bare butt to the audience.

Adult Written by lorraine delacorte July 26, Adult Written by Natalie M. May 30, Informative and Entertaining A lot of the twist and turns and drama is for entertainment, but every once in a while there are episodes to help inform teens about their lives and the world they live in.

Degrassi doesn't shy away from topics such as sexuality, abusive relationships, depression, anxiety, the consequences of drugs, and teen pregnancy. In fact, Degrassi's suicide storyline season 12 was way more informative and better written than 13 Reasons Why. The show stresses kids to seek help from an adult in a lot of cases. Adult Written by Kaitlyn S. March 3, Degrassi doesn't encourage your children to do bad things, instead it teaches them not to do them.

Any adult who is saying that this show has too much sex, drugs, etc. If you believe that things like this aren't happening in high schools, you are just lying to yourself. Maybe this isn't how things were when you were younger, but times change.

Kids these days are more conditioned to knowing about these different topics and issues at a younger age then you would imagine. Degrassi does not encourage any bad behavior, rather it expresses the issues behind them and shows why they are bad to TEACH a lesson about REAL things that happen in this world. I grew up watching this show and it helped me grow incredibly. Wish more shows were like this instead of the ridiculous un-realistic shows we have popular today.

Adult Written by b. May 2, I think it's a great, entertaining show. Would i let children or teenagers watch it? No way in hell. When my family and i all adults would watch the show together we would joke that we were glad we didn't go to Degrassi Community School - no one survives that school without being either bullied, raped, shot, stabbed, getting pregnant, put into a coma, killed or catching a venereal disease.

Sometimes all of the above. It must be a traumatic place to grow up. When i was in high school in the 90s, yes, there was "business" going down that we all knew about, but it wasn't lurking around every corner the way this show makes it seem. And i know things have changed for teens today. I am a former high school teacher and i was surprised at how much the kids knew compared to what we did and I'm sure they know even more now.

But i still doubt that the dangers are waiting to jump out and grab them. But Degrassi sure gives them ideas on how to look, with the skanky clothes, provacative behaviors, casual ideas about sex, underage drinking, heavy drug use and doing whatever it takes to put yourself in a bad situation even if it helps find their way out in the end. Again, i think this show is awesome, just not for young viewers. Parent Written by Allison G. March 11, Targeted to teens but is likely not a healthful choice for the target age group This is not an appropriate show for teens or teens.

I began watching this show at age thirteen and can honestly say rhat I picked up some very unhealthy behaviors directly from this show. Maybe a different kind of child could more easily recognize the unwanted outcomes of the casts behavior but I watched it for the drama and I wanted the drama in my life.

When I found that my 12 year olf daughter had been watching episodes at her girlfriends house I rewatched a few episodes and couldn't believe that this was target to teens Adult Written by coolsimpsonsfan December 31, It's a crap tv show It crude rude drugs and swearing no one should watch.
