What do whitman and dickinson have in common

Common sense is something seen in my life in many aspects such as government procedures and everyday life. Without common sense life becomes meaningless, and mindless. Both poets felt a personal relationship with death and they both knew that they would eventually die, but Whitman tries to fight it, while Dickinson accepts it. Although, Walt Whitman was a very rambunctious man who believed that life should be lived to. Anne Bradstreet wrote her poetry very seriously a Bradstreet lived in a very strict religious community which would not have accepted very many new or provocative ideas such as those of Anne Hutchinson and Anne Bradstreet.

This caused Bradstreet to hide her ideas in the lines of poetry which she created for her family and friends. If she had intended her poetry to be used for the purpose of making money or expressing ideas she would have written them so that they would have been more widely accepted at the time in which she lived.

It is apparent that Bradstreet never intended to publish her more personal poems such as, To My Dear and Loving Husband because of its provocative language and lack of religious ideas.

Even t In this poem an elaborate struggle between pride and shame manifests itself through an extended metaphor in which she equates her book to her own child. In addition she also relates some of the story as to how her work came to be published.

The average person could not relate to the distress Bradstreet feels in this situation. She wrote unconventional, but her poems were unique by lacking a title and using different punctuation People can learn about Emily Dickinson without just reading her biography.

Her poetry reveals many aspects of her life such as solitude, pain, religion, love, and death. This can be a surprisingly deep message for readers when reading in a cheerful and sing-song tone.

Not only does she use the unexpected form for her poetry, but she also throws in unexpected style by adding her own touch of dashes and unique capitalization as seen in her poem number Her use of dashes here shows her ability to stray from the strict style and be more creative.

Whitman wrote in free verse, with no meter or strict rhyme. This is quite the opposite of that of Dickinson. Though at first glance, this could seem chaotic, free for all of a writing style, Whitman added some structure to his works by playing with other devices such as repetition and alliteration which added more fluidity to his poetry. Whitman wrote a lot about nature and what that meant for the average, everyday man. His time spent as a nurse allowed him to write about the war and those affected by it, including soldiers.

One thing that these two poets had in common would be there use of death as a theme throughout their work, though they approached this theme very differently. Whitman tended to view death as a chance to see life after death, though this is not always easy to accept.

Even with such a complex and seemingly open thought poem, Whitman is using the style of an Elegy to write this poem. An elegy, is a poem written in elegiac verse, couplets consisting of a hexameter line followed by a pentameter line, this structure to this poem is what Whitman brings to the table in terms of professional style. This is what makes these poets both similar, yet vastly different. They are able to both discuss similar themes in their poetry, but in different styles and with very different content.

During this time period, religion was one of the things to develop quickly after being dissected and scrutinized for being irrelevant or out of touch. Whitman oftentimes tried to combat the idea of religion, partly due to his philosophy of transcendentalism. In this poem, Whitman gives us the speaker of the poem listening to an astronomer lecture.

How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick. This is a perfect example of how Whitman and Dickinson approach similar topics in drastically different ways and styles. Throughout their work, we see many different similarities and differences in poets Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman.

Though dealing with similar topics, Dickinson and Whitman do a good job of writing in vastly different styles, Whitman often more open free verse, and Dickinson with the more rigid and structured fourteener meter. There different backgrounds and time spent as youths make them very different poets who have their unique style and content which helped them to shape American poetry into what it is today.

The similarity in meanings between Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman is they both compare the world to the individuals. There are a lot of differences between Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman.
