Why do hedgehogs hiss

If that is the case, visit a vet to find out whether there is something wrong with your hedgy or not. A new environment is one of the biggest stress reasons for newly adopted hedgehogs. Hedgehogs are prey animals, and they dislike change. When a lot of things change, like smells, sounds, food, etc. The easiest way to stop hissing in hedgehogs is to find out the reason due to which they are doing this behavior. Visit a vet to figure things out.

Stress can result in them having a rude behavior, eating less, being inactive, hissing, and popping making weird sounds , and even biting. Yes, they do. Hedgehogs poop a lot when they are scared.

Be patient with your new hedgehog, and it may come around. Keep having contact with the hedgehog even if it hisses at you. If you get scared by their hissing, it may reinforce their behavior, and they may never become close to you.

Hold them for at least 30 days every day. You can do it twice or thrice in order to reduce the per session time. This will help him associate your scent with lovely things like sleeping and eating.

Scheduling is vital with hedgehogs. You should schedule a time for feeding, cleaning, taking them out, etc. Hedgehogs have a particular body clock, and therefore they need a scheduled lighting time in their area. Keep a regular schedule of lighting safe from 8 AM to 8 PM.

And, this could really help out. Hedgehogs are naturally solitary creatures. They spend just a few weeks in the nest and with the mother and their siblings. Then they will gradually wander off each on their own. And as you say, it will be time to hibernate soon. Do you have nesting boxes in your garden?

I put them out in April but they came back. I finally put them out again two days ago. Tonight I found one of them making a curling noise like a bird in distress. Do adults sometimes make this noise, there are no signs of any hoglets. This has been fantastically useful. I have a couple of hogs in my garden and have heard some odd noises.

Thank you so much. A great article. I found your very informative website this morning by Googling: snuffling like a steam engine. Just last night in Gloucestershire we saw and heard this behaviour by two hedgehogs in our garden. It has a messy corner to give them refuge. Hi I just had two hedgehogs in my garden. Larger one was circling smaller one and pushing its nose to the other one which was backing up.

None of the noises above match the noise I heard. Any ideas what this is? Larger one left. Smaller one stayed, then after a couple of minutes, left in the opposite direction. Very unusual, but not unknown. Have you seen either of them since? Early this morning I saw a hedgehog being attacked by a skunk — really!! The skunk soon disappeared and the hedgehog was screaming like a baby in pain.

Many thanks. Thanks for the useful info. From listening to the videos it seemed to be a mating call although seems a tad late in the year for that. Since then the dogs are let out for the last time before it gets dark. Hi Emma, This sounds amazing.

We had one almost wander in though the patio doors a couple of nights ago. I think we are quite lucky. Most hogs will have had one litter earlier in the year, but many will have another in September, so they could be mating now. Keep a watch out for autumn hoglets.

They struggle to put on the weight they need for hibernation and may need some extra help. Keep us posted. But last night he was not at his regular spot, so I waited until pit was dark before checking again.

This time, about a yard from his feeding place, were 2 hedgehogs, who I thought was my original with a new friend, about to share supper……however there was much hissing going on… and it was hard to know what it was all about. After a couple more minutes, one scuttled off and I thought it best to leave the other alone.

I suppose the only welcome jog will be a sow? And At what time of year does mating occur? Hi Nick, Sounds like its all going on in your garden! Even when your hog finds a sow, ti will only be. A one night stand. We have hedgehogs in our garden and a lovely hedgehog house which they totally ignore in favour of the back of our shed! There will have been a litter earlier in the year. Watch with space, we are owing to do an article on this in the next couple of week.

Keep us posted on how yours are getting on. I have 3 or 4 hobs visit for scattered food ever night, occasionally 5 or 6. Utterly wonderful Recently a large hog has been turning up making the most exraordinary purring noise. She sounds very content, but it is nothing like the other hogs noises.

Always when more than 1 hog is present. One hog will be feeding or moving forward, the second hog backs away in a jerky movement. The huffing noise is always made by the reversing hog. Would love to know if anyone else has come across a purring hog!

Thanks for interesting article. Thanks for sharing this — sounds amazing! There is quite a bit about purring hedgehogs from the US, where they keep African Pygmy hogs as pets. The consensus seems to be that the noise is all about being relaxed and contented — so it sound like you have a very happy guest there!

There are many ways to get them used to your scent. Hence, handling them barehanded is one great way to get them used to your scent. Always speak to them. Allow them to always hear your voice. Especially during feeding baths, snuggle, bonding time.

Condition them to hear your voice every time they are feeling good. This way they will associate your voice with pleasure. Now that you know how they are able to recognize you, there are a few methods to bond with them. I will start off with the simplest and most effective method. Using a t-shirt you wore for a day or 2, place it in the cage or hang it over the cage.

This should get them used to your scent in no time. You can also sleep on fresh clean fleece for 1 night before changing them into the cage using it as their bedding. Just make sure they are still clean though. Just like how you snuggle a baby, you can snuggle with your hedgehog too!

Despite their spiky spines. You simply lay them on your lap while watching tv or when you are using your computer. For even better bonding effect, hold them in your hands and against your chest. This allows them to feel your body heat and hear your heartbeat. Let them fall asleep on your lap or chest. They may fidget and move around while on your lap. Some may even spike up during this bonding session.

These problems can occur when during your first few bonding. So to help with that, you can put them in a nice fleece pouch or a warm fleece bag then place them on your lap or chest. Hedgehogs can get scared easily when they hear something unfamiliar or new.

Just like any animal, we all fear uncertainty. Because once they get used to total silence, any sudden noises like talking, starting your car engine or even flushing of the toilet can scare them. These 3 methods are the most common and effective methods to bond with your hedgehogs.

If it is your first time, be patient with your hedgehogs. Try out all the different methods to see which fits your hedgehog best. You will probably get pricked often during this period of bond-building so be mentally prepared. So try out all the different methods and let us know if they worked for you. In the midst of trying, do you have any other methods that you find effective?

On the other hand, the stress could be caused by another hedgehog housed directly opposite and simply changing the housing arrangement would instantly solve the problem. The second thing you need to do is look for the source of what is causing the problem.

This really is a process of elimination and you should start with what seems the most obvious and work backwards. As we mentioned before, if you have 2 or more pets in the same room then separating the pets might be a good place to start. Less obvious reasons can be things like an injury or losing quills which is another reason we mentioned earlier. We recommend that you go back and check out the list we provided earlier in this post that gives you lots of possible reasons why your hedgehog may feel they need to hiss.

This will help you brainstorm and possible reasons and maybe pick up on something simple that you previously overlooked. Hi, My name is Adam. I'm the main author of Pocket Pets Forever.
