Gutierrez, a native of Vera Cruz, Mexico, rides for leading owner Glen Todd at Hastings and accepted Todd's invitation to ride his horses in Southern California during the winter. Todd suggested that Gutierrez hire an agent and he began to pick up business from other trainers. Lewis, and he delivered a victory in his first ride for the stable. Watching the Kentucky Derby win, you can see the horse swing his head ever so briefly to the right, and then he is gracefully brought back in.

They would get too tired using the same lead foot the entire race. But in the Derby, he did move right a little on the turn, as he changed legs.
